Clear security guidance. Federal IT opportunities. Something useful to learn.
Today’s practical briefing: start with your actual exposure
A long vulnerability list can leave a small IT team wondering where to start. Identify which affected products you actually run, especially those reachable from the internet. Then check whether attackers are exploiting the issue and follow the vendor’s remediation guidance.
In plain English: CISA is the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog identifies vulnerabilities with evidence of exploitation. Use it alongside asset importance and exposure when prioritizing patches.
Your next step: Pick one internet-facing service. Record its product and version, check for applicable catalog entries, assign an owner, and document the patch or mitigation and how you will verify it.
Source: CISA’s KEV catalog. This is practical guidance, not a claim that a new vulnerability was announced today.

Learn something useful: a backup needs a restore test
A successful backup job does not tell you how long recovery will take. Use a non-production test file and an isolated restore location for this exercise.
- Create a small sample file and include it in your normal backup workflow.
- Restore it into a separate test folder, keeping the original intact.
- Check that its contents match. Record the elapsed restore time and backup timestamp.
- Compare the result with your recovery time objective (RTO: acceptable recovery duration) and recovery point objective (RPO: acceptable data-loss window).
Document what you restored, what worked, and what needs fixing before an emergency.
