Horton IT Daily — September 25, 2026: Your Next Security Win

HORTON IT DAILY

Your next security win starts with one better question.

Friday, September 25, 2026 · Horton IT Enterprises LLC · 4-minute read

Before you automate a response, ask what the alert actually means. Today: a practical triage lesson, free cybersecurity learning, a procurement checkpoint, and a little IT humor to finish the week.

The security desk

Less noise. Better decisions. A severity score is a starting point. Pair it with business context: Is the affected identity privileged? Is the system exposed? Does the evidence support the alert? Who owns the response?

Your five-minute action: Choose one alert and record its affected asset, supporting evidence, business impact, and next owner. If those four fields are missing, gather context before approving a disruptive action.

Threat-feed status: We could not retrieve an authoritative current threat bulletin for this edition. This section is practical editorial guidance, not a claim about a newly discovered attack. Check the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog and the affected vendor’s advisories before deciding what to patch.

The two-minute lesson: severity is not priority

Severity describes potential harm. Priority adds context about exposure, asset importance, confidence, and business impact. A high-severity alert in an isolated test environment and a medium-severity alert on a privileged production account may require very different response times.

Keep four things in your triage record:

  1. The original event and where it came from.
  2. Evidence supporting the assigned priority.
  3. The analyst’s decision and its rationale.
  4. Approval and a rollback plan for any response.

Try it today: Using a synthetic alert, write two reasons it matters and one reason it could be a false positive. Explain the priority in one sentence.

Opportunity watch: verify before you bid

No currently open IT solicitation with a verified future response deadline was confirmed for this edition. That does not mean there are no opportunities.

Bid-desk habit: Keep a short go/no-go checklist covering scope fit, mandatory credentials, delivery capacity, submission method, and the latest official deadline.

On this day: a faster bus, a familiar lesson

The Computer History Museum’s September 25, 1987 entry describes IBM’s Micro Channel Architecture announcement. Other PC manufacturers largely chose different approaches. Our takeaway: technical performance is only part of adoption; ecosystem compatibility matters, too. Read the history entry.

IT Life: the backup checkup

Three-panel comic: A manager asks, Is the backup healthy? An administrator answers, The dashboard is green. A backup drive replies, I'd like a second opinion.

Original comic, illustrated with AI. A successful backup deserves a restore test.

The sysadmin horoscope

For entertainment only · All signs welcome. The stars favor small changes, clear notes, and a tested rollback. Your lucky number is three: one backup, one restore test, one relieved engineer.
